Three or four decades ago, I knew a woman who was married to a pretty well-known cricketer. It wasn’t a harmonious relationship, the main problem being that he had to be right all the time, and there was no room for sane conversation. I don’t know what happened in the end, although I’d be surprised if they stayed together long. Unbelievably, I met another woman who was involved in an affair with a cricketer. I should add that I met these women in a business context, and there was nothing personal involved, despite the confessions they felt compelled to share. In the end, he beat her up out of jealousy. Unfortunately, both cases involved cricketers, although the point I want to make applies to competitive sports in general.
