People tend to desperately need meaning and purpose. Ultimately, it’s a search for significance despite the screamingly obvious fact that each one of us is wholly insignificant. In reality, our insignificance liberates us, but that’s a topic for another discussion. We are such needy creatures that we are prone to believe any unsubstantiated nonsense to address this issue of insignificance. The nonsense takes many forms: religion, spiritual traditions, pop psychology, political movements, and self-help are the more popular variants.
